FORE and ICJR Collaborating on Exclusive Educational Content for ICJR Members

The International Congress for Joint Reconstruction (ICJR) and the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE) are launching an exciting partnership that builds on their respective strengths in providing educational opportunities across the orthopaedic sub-specialties.

ICJR will develop a FORE educational gateway on ICJR’s website, ICJR.net, to expand the site’s content beyond the hip, knee, and shoulder into additional areas of orthopaedic surgery. Beginning this month, ICJR will record presentations at FORE’s meetings and then posts them in the FORE gateway as an educational benefit for ICJR members.

In addition, ICJR and FORE will jointly sponsor the 2016 Current Solutions in Foot and Ankle Surgery meeting, to be held January 21-23 in Tampa, Florida.

“ICJR is known as a leading provider of education focused on the hip, knee, and shoulder through our live meetings, live surgery broadcasts, webinars, websites, and mobile app,” said W. Norman Scott, MD, FACS, president of ICJR.

“By leveraging FORE’s exceptional strength in other areas of orthopaedics such as the spine, trauma, sports medicine, and the hand and wrist, ICJR will be able to expand the breadth of high-quality educational content we provide exclusively for our members.”

ICJR will cover FORE meetings on these topics in 2015 and 2016 and post the presentations not only on on ICJR.net, but also on ICJR Mobile, ICJR’s app for tablets and smartphones.

AAOS Accepted Studies

Researchers at FORE will present 8 original studies this year at the annual AAOS meeting in Las Vegas, NV held March 24th-26th. The studies involve risk factors for poor functional improvement following reverse shoulder arthroplasty (Neer Award Nominee), the biomechanical comparison of flexor tendon repair using different sutures, reverse shoulder arthroplasty in patients with Parkinson’s disease, plate fixation in severely comminuted radius fractures, factors affecting pain levels following rotator cuff repair, cost analysis of the two-week radiograph following operatively treated distal radius fractures, comparison of intertrochanteric hip fracture fixation in a biomechanical chair rise model and age related effects following total knee replacement.

FIVE Labs Open for Business

FORE is proud to present the Florida InnoVation and Education (FIVE) Labs. FIVE Labs is a new and innovative facility designed to educate the next generation of healthcare professionals and to foster creativity for the development of technologies for healthcare’s biggest challenges. Over the years, FORE has become a nationally recognized facility for the education of surgeons and healthcare professionals on cutting-edge surgical techniques and medical devices. We have built a reputation in the industry as easy to work with, flexible, and committed to the success of each educational event.

FIVE Labs is a continuation of that culture, but in a facility and location that allows us to do much more. We found a new location minutes away from Tampa International Airport and in walking distance from several hotels and restaurants in the area. In June of 2014, we began a massive remodeling project to repurpose the building into a space ideal for conferences and bioskills lab events. We drew on our experience of conducting hundreds of bioskills and CME events over the last eight years to create a facility designed for an optimal learning experience. We are happy to announce that our new facility officially opened in January 2015.

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery Publishes Study Conducted at FORE

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery recently published a case control study conducted at FORE in conjunction with the Ioannis P. Pappou, MD, PhD. And Mark A. Frankle, MD from Florida Orthopaedic Institute on “Outcomes and Costs of Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty in the Morbidly Obese.” The article is one of the first cost evaluation studies to be published regarding obesity in orthopaedics.  “The study investigated the effect of morbid obesity on outcomes, complications, discharges, disposition, and costs in patients undergoing reverse shoulder arthroplasty.” The study found that “Reverse shoulder arthroplasty appears to be as safe and effective in morbidly obese patients, although it has an increased cost and patients have a lower rate of discharge to home and greater care needs after discharge.” To read more click here

FORE Presents 2 Original Research Studies at ISASS

Today begins the 14th Annual International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS) in Miami, Florida. Two original research studies conducted at the Phillip Spiegel Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at FORE were accepted for presentation as part of the program.

The podium presentations will be delivered by FORE Research Director Brandon Santoni, PhD. The first presentation, which will be presented on Wednesday, during the Degenerative Lumbar Spine General Session will be “Indirect Decompression of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis with Transpsoas Interbody Cages and Percutaneous Posterior Instrumentation.” The second “Accuracy, Safety & Intraoperative Radiation in Robot-Guided Percutaneous Screw Placement,” will be given in the New Technology in Spine Surgery General Session on Friday afternoon.  Both of these original research studies were completed under the direction of the late Tony Castellvi, MD.

In addition to the podium presentations, Dr. Santoni will be moderating the Spine Biomechanics General Session with Lisa Ferrara, Ph.D. on Friday, May 2, 2014.

ISASS is an international, scientific and educational society organized to discuss and assess existing strategies and innovative ideas in the clinical and basic sciences related to spine surgery and to enhance patient care.

The Next 5 Years in the Global Orthopaedic Industry


Derek Pupello, CEO of FORE recently presented “The Next 5 Years in the Global Orthopaedic Industry” at the Life Sciences Forum in Costa Rica. This was the second year of the meeting which had nearly 500 participants and over 50 exhibitors in the medical device manufacturing field. Derek’s presentation covered the history of some of the current innovations that are often taken for granted today as well as current trends in orthopaedics including patient specific implants, disposable instruments, smart implants, robot assisted surgery, alternative bearing surfaces, biologics and stem cell therapies. He also discussed the shift to value-based care and how that will impact innovation in the future. The conference provided a unique opportunity for Derek to discuss some of FORE’s ongoing projects and how FORE has played a role in many of the current innovations in orthopaedics.

FORE announces Current Solutions in Spine Surgery renamed in honor of Dr. Tony Castellvi

FORE announced last week that the “Current Solutions in Spine Surgery” course, held in the Florida Keys, will be renamed in honor of the late Dr. Tony Castellvi. The new name is to honor Castellvi as the founder of the nearly decade-old course as well as his distinguished career as an orthopeadic surgeon.  A tribute was held during the 2014 meeting to announce the renaming of the course to “Castellvi Spine”.

“His contributions to spine surgery will be forever recognized and his legacy will continue to make substantial contributions to clinical practice and the surgical management of patients with pathological spinal conditions,” said Derek Pupello, CEO of FORE.

A longtime advocate of spine research, Castellvi served as medical director of the spinal component of the Phillip Spiegel Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at FORE. His work resulted in multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts published in elite spine journals as well as special recognition at international spine conferences. His studies alone have had global impact on the use of minimally invasive surgical approaches to treat lower back pain.

While the name has changed, the focus of the course remains the same: to provide participants with education on cutting-edge procedures, the latest innovations in biomechanics and the most controversial topics in the realm of spine surgery. The “Castellvi Spine” course is scheduled for May 6-9, 2015 in Duck Key, Florida.

FORE Loses a Friend and Visionary Researcher

Dr. Tony Castellvi “Doc” was an irreplaceable part of what we do at FORE and he will be sorely missed by everyone in our organization. He will be remembered for his humor, his larger than life personality, and his willingness to share his wisdom and expertise with his colleagues, fellows and our team. 2014 would have been the 9th year that FORE has partnered with Doc to run his “Current Solutions in Spine Surgery” Course in the Florida Keys.

As medical director of the spinal component of the Phillip Spiegel Orthopaedic Research Laboratory, Dr. Castellvi served as lead investigator on biomechanical projects that evaluated new and emerging fusion and motion preserving technologies designed to treat patients with back pain related to degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine. Under his leadership, the biomechanical engineering group evaluated the efficacy of laterally placed interbody fusion cages placed through a less invasive surgical approach that are designed to alleviate back pain while promoting bony fusion at the affected lumbar level. This work resulted in three peer-reviewed manuscripts published in elite spine journals.

Further, these research endeavors received special recognition at two international spine conferences.  At the International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques (IMAST) held in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2011, Dr. Castellvi’s work was nominated for the prestigious Whitecloud Award for Best Basic Science Research.  The same year at the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS) meeting in Las Vegas, his work was recognized as one of the best minimally invasive surgery papers presented at the conference.  This study alone has had global impact on the use of this minimally invasive surgical approach to treat low back pain.

More recent biomechanical studies spearheaded by Dr. Castellvi include the evaluation of a new integrated interbody fusion device that can be used to address degeneration in the cervical spine as well as the evaluation of a second generation total facet replacement device. These works have also been presented at multiple international meetings including ISASS, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the North American Spine Society.  One of these recent research projects was published just this year in The Spine Journal, which is the highest ranked spine journal in the world.

Dr. Castellvi had a true passion for basic science spine research and his contributions in the laboratory have made and will continue to make substantial contributions to clinical practice and the surgical management of patients with pathological spinal conditions that require surgical intervention.

Orthopalooza Raises $30,000 for Handicap Accessible Ramp at Metropolitan Ministries

Shoulder and elbow surgeons from 12 countries and throughout the United States came to Tampa to lecture, learn and celebrate at Orthopalooza.

Doctors Mark Frankle and Mark Mighell welcomed 100 guests Saturday at the Hilton Tampa Downtown, including 10 past presidents of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgical association.

As “sawbones” who understand limited mobility, organizers offered to raise $30,000 to build a handicapped-accessible entrance to Metropolitan Ministries’ outreach center that serves hundreds of visitors in wheelchairs.

“Not to mention all the moms with strollers,” said Metropolitan Ministries CEO Tim Marks.

Ten bucks bought a caricature, photo booth strip or photo taken with Tampa Bay Buc cheerleaders. One donor’s pledge got Frankle and Mighell on stage for a duet, singing Jackson Browne’s appropriate hit, Doctor My Eyes. A $1,000 donation compelled Tampa Bay Buc linebacker Dekoda Watson to sing Outkast’s Hey Ya! and the Temptations’ My Girl. That sure got the crowd on the dance floor.
