Clinical Training

Clinic Objectives

  • check_circle Obtain accurate histories and perform thorough physical examinations for patients with hip and knee arthritis and failed joint replacements
  • check_circle Develop and execute patient management plans
  • check_circle Proficiency in intra-articular and bursal injections of the hip and knee
  • check_circle Advanced imaging interpretation — plain and fluoroscopic x-rays, MRI, CT, and nuclear medicine scans
  • check_circle Evaluate and treat post-operative orthopaedic patients

Surgical Objectives

  • check_circle Participate as assistant and progress toward proficiency in simple and complex joint reconstruction procedures
  • check_circle Competence in open and arthroscopic surgery techniques
  • check_circle Training in computer navigation, small-incision, and muscle-sparing joint replacement techniques
  • check_circle Exposure to complex revision hip and knee surgery

Didactic & Educational Program

A structured weekly conference schedule ensures consistent academic education alongside clinical and surgical rotations.

Monday Morning Conference

7:00–8:30 AM via Microsoft Teams. Attended by AR attendings, fellows, PAs/ARNPs, research staff, and special guests. Includes a 45-minute lecture from a senior attendee covering basic science and applied anatomy, followed by Q&A and fellow case presentations.

In-Person Conference at FIVE Labs

Third Monday of every month — in-person M&M conference at FIVE Labs (4115 W. Spruce Street, Tampa). Breakfast and coffee provided.

Journal Club

Last Wednesday of every month, August through June. Overseen by Dr. Miranda. Fellows select and present literature with a full discussion of the AR team. Industry-sponsored; location rotates in the South Tampa area.

USF Grand Rounds at FIVE Labs

Fridays at 7:00 AM at FIVE Labs (4115 W. Spruce Street, Tampa). 2026–27 AR dates: Aug 21, Oct 16, Jan 29, Mar 12. Fellows present cases to USF residents, FOI physicians, and guests. CME credit available upon registration.

Research Training

Research is a foundational pillar of the Adult Reconstruction Fellowship, in keeping with the academic vision of FOI founder Dr. Phillip Spiegel. Fellows are expected to contribute meaningfully to the orthopaedic literature during their training year.

Research Requirements

Minimum of two research projects completed during the fellowship year, suitable for submission to peer-reviewed journals

Abstract submissions to AAHKS and AAOS annual meetings (deadlines typically around June 1)

Presentation of annual research project at the Orthopaedic Research Day at FIVE Labs (June)

AR Research Meetings

Friday afternoons at 2:00 PM via Microsoft Teams. Covers clinical research and biomechanical study status, upcoming projects, and fellow project updates.

Dr. Palumbo Research Meetings

Friday afternoons at 3:30 PM via Microsoft Teams. Open discussion of ongoing projects and collaboration with Dr. Palumbo.

Biomechanics Laboratory

Fellows have access to FORE's fully staffed biomechanics laboratory, directed by Miguel Diaz and supported by biomedical engineering staff, for biomechanical and translational research projects.

Fellow Call

Backup call to Tampa General Hospital, including all ER calls, transfers, and emergency surgeries.

TGH Call

Weekend rounding at Tampa General Hospital and answering floor calls.

FOI Call

Answering patient pages, pain medication questions, and post-operative inquiries.
