Dr. Mark A. Frankle Delivers the Neer Lecture at ICSES 2026

Dr. Mark A. Frankle, Chief of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at Florida Orthopaedic Institute and Principal Investigator for FORE, delivered the Charles S. Neer Lecture at the 16th International Congress on Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ICSES) in Vancouver, Canada, on September 23, 2026.

His talk centered on a cycle he says every person and every field goes through: crisis, survival, resilience, and thriving. He shared the story of his parents, who survived the Warsaw Ghetto and rebuilt their lives in the United States, and how it shaped his values. He then traced the same patter through three pioneers, Codman, Neer, and Grammont, and through his own work. Reverse shoulder arthroplasty had no approved device in the U.S. until 2004 and drew heavy skepticism, so he redesigned it, guided by outcome data from thousands of cases. It is now the fastest growing arthroplasty in the world.

He closed with the line: “Survival is a seed. What we build with it is the legacy.”
